Assignment 3 - Progress Work (House)

Sketch of my compounding ideas:

It's time for Architecture to "do" things again and not just merely represent things and it should be no different for a model of architecture. The following is a break down of how the model "does" things and "represents" things.

Do:

  • Lighting:
This model had been designed originally to be a desktop pen and cup holder but has since evolved to function as a bedside lamp. The reason for this move was because I couldn't bear the risk of spilling water or accidentally drawing on a masterpiece!
  • The Supermodel:
This model had been designed so as to push the boundaries of fabrication technique and material limits to demonstrate if it's possible as a model, it's definitely possible in reality.
  • The Experience:
This model has also been used as a platform for which I can push myself beyond my comfort zone when working with materials and for the first time, electronics. The model gave me a reason to explore and try out new things.
  • To look good!
After all, what use is a model if it doesn't look good and sell itself? Models are meant to sell an idea and intoxicate a client into spending money on your vision.
Represent:
  • The Super Model
Kate Moss (like all other high profile models) has essentially become a part of the public domain. Models acknowledge once their career takes off, their image will be replicated everywhere in probably every form possible. This model represents how she is at the centre of the city and the "talk of the town".
  • The Fashion World
The perimeter buildings/towers makes a comment on how she will always be on show (even in her own private time such as when she is at home) and when people talk about her, they are behind an office building and their office desk tapping away for the next issue of their fashion magazine. The text is often full of nonsense and intellectuals will actually find their IQ dropping having read the articles (I know mine did when I read an article on Pippa Middleton the other day...)
